Immigration Medicals

Southpoint Family Doctors is an authorised provider of medical examinations for Immigration New Zealand. This means that individuals or families requiring medical assessments for their immigration applications can have their examinations conducted at our facility.

Being an authorised provider means that our clinic meets the standards and criteria set by Immigration New Zealand to conduct medical examinations. You can rest assured knowing that your health assessment will be thorough, accurate, and fully compliant with immigration requirements.

First visit

  • Registration and digital photo
  • Initial consulation: medical history, physical examination
  • Urine test: if required, you will complete this at our clinic*
  • Blood test: if required, we will conduct this onsite. It will be send to the lab for analysis and returned to the clinic for review.
  • Chest X-ray: if required, we will issue a referral form to an approved radiology centre.
  • Extra tests or examinations as required by Immigration NZ to complete e-medical.

*If urine test results are abnormal, the sample will be sent to the lab for further testing.

Second visit

  • Follow-up consultation: medical review including review of lab test and chest x-ray results. E-submission must take place within 10 days from initiation of e-medical.
  • Extra tests or examinations as required by Immigration NZ to complete e-medical.

  • IMMIGRATION MEDICAL PROCESS MAY TAKE UP TO 4-7 WORKING DAYS.
  • The e-medical must be submitted to IMMIGRATION NZ within 10 working days.

Preparing for your visit

  • No need to fast prior to your appointment. Avoid caffeine and drink water for hydration.
  • ARRIVAL: please arrive 20-30 minutes prior to your appointment
  • Interpreter: please bring YOUR OWN. However, we do have clinical team members who can speak a range of different languages: English, Samoan, Tongan
  • Under 17yrs: please bring a parent or guardian
  • Passport: bring your passport and one for each member of your group. We cannot process your visa medical without it, and you will be asked to reschedule. Passports need to be currently valid; we cannot accept expired passports.
  • Health information: please bring any information you have regarding medical conditions or health concerns e.g. specialist letters or results
  • Medication: please bring your medications or a list of medications from your doctor or pharmacist
  • Glasses or contact lenses: please bring them if you use them
  • If you are pregnant, please bring confirmation to your appointment
  • If you are on your period or menstrual cycle, please reschedule your appointment to ensure accurate test results

Children 0-10yrs $110

Blood or Urine Tests

If a lab test is required for 0-14 yrs, there will be an additional charge depending on the type of lab test requested by Immigration New Zealand.

Youth 11-14yrs $120

Blood or Urine Tests

If a lab test is required for 0-14 yrs, there will be an additional charge depending on the type of lab test requested by Immigration New Zealand.

15-64yrs General Medical $170

Blood Tests $255

Includes x7 blood tests

15-64yrs Limited Medical $150

65+yrs General Medical $180

Chest X-rays

If a chest X-ray is required, the doctor will provide a referral for a chest x-ray.

The actual chest x-ray is a separate charge that you will pay directly to the radiology centre. Each centre will charge their own rate (approx. $120). 

If you do not need a medical, just a chest x-ray, you will still need a referral form to get this done. This will be $100 charge paid to Southpoint, in addition to the cost of x-ray paid to the radiology centre.

Extra Tests/Exams

If immigration should require extra tests or medical reviews over and above the standard medicals, this will be at the patients cost. Some examples inlcude Mini Mental State (>70), Activities of daily living, TB testing, drug testing, urine testing, extra blood tests. We will provide a quote for these tests prior to your visit.

Blood Tests are done at our clinic. Pay directly to Southpoint Family Doctor's.

Chest X-rays are done at Radiology Centre - pay directly to radiology centre.

  • Please call us on 0800 242 200 as soon as you can if you must cancel or change your appointment.
  • You may make any changes or cancel a scheduled appointment up to 48 hours (2 days) prior to your appointment time.
  • If you do not attend your scheduled appointment and make no attempt to notify of this, you will be charged a fee of $60.
  • If you’re unwell at the time of your immigration medical this may influence your submission. Please let the team know if you are sick as we may need to
    reschedule your appointment.
    If you’re having your period, you can’t go through with a Full Immigration Medical because of blood in your urine. You will need to reschedule.

There are two ways you can get a visa medical done.
1. Call us on 0800 242 200 to chat to one of our friendly reception staff to assist you.
2. Walk into our clinic at Southpoint Family Doctors and ask if you can get an appointment.
You can complete the PATIENT IMMIGRATION FORM, PAY for your e-medical and an APPOINTMENT can be made.
Keep in mind that appointments are based on availability for that day.

We’ll complete the eMedical with you during your visa medical appointment.
This includes:
• A health questionnaire
• A declaration (which is a legal statement you need to sign)
• Measurements by the clinical team (i.e. vision, blood pressure, height and weight)
• A physical examination by the doctor, urine test, blood test and/or chest X-ray referral if required.

  • A full immigration medical can take up to 1 hour to complete.
  • A limited immigration medical can take up to 45 minutes to complete.

Extra charges will apply if:
• Extra tests or those that may be required to ensure your emedical is approved by Immigration NZ
• Follow-up services you may need after we have submitted your emedical to Immigration NZ

Your results normally take no longer than 3-7 days to get back. If there is a problem with a blood test (which is uncommon), it can take longer.

  • Your results will be discussed in your medical follow-up appointment and a copy will be given to you.
  • You will receive an email once the doctor has completed your immigration e-medical which will contain your test results (4-7 working days, 10 working days maximum).

A limited medical examination checks for conditions which are the most expensive and place the most demand on New Zealand’s health system and special education services. EMedical is Immigration New Zealand’s online health processing system used by panel physicians to submit chest x-rays and medical certificates.
